The Centre for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law (CPEEL), University of Ibadan, was established in July 2011 as a John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation-funded Centre of Excellence with the main goal of training highly skilled personnel and conducting research on energy. It is the only institution of its kind in Africa.
cpeel aims to provide a world-class milieu in which advanced energy research, training and advocacy are undertaken and anchored on combining the best local, regional and global expertise in energy.
One of the main objectives of the Centre is to develop the human capacity needed to formulate and implement energy policies and regulations to manage effectively the natural resources of Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and to provide a platform for energy professionals, institutions and the general public to meet. This platform will bring together consumer groups, the media and the civil society organizations through outreach activities and training programmes such that energy policies and regulations can be better scrutinized by an informed public and stakeholders.
The Centre's operations revolve round teaching and capacity building, research, outreach, and staff development.
1. Teaching and Capacity Building
The scope of collaboration in this area includes using the services of academic staff across the participating institutions, industry and government for the following:
- Graduate training leading to Masters and PhD degrees
- Certificate and diploma courses
- Short-term industry and policy targeted programmes
2. Research
The Centre shall engage in multidisciplinary collaborative research on major issues relating to the energy sector in particular and the national economy in general.
3. Outreach
The outreach programme of the Centre shall be in the form of conferences, seminars, guest lectures, and dissemination of findings of policy research. The purpose is to ensure interaction among the participating institutions, the professional bodies, private sector, other research and training centres within and outside Nigeria. Staff of the Centre will also be engaged in consultancies for government, international agencies and the energy industry.
4. Staff Development
The Centre will encourage the training of staff, especially the junior and younger faculty members.
