Community Meeting between the Head of Department and Students

At the conclusion of the first semester examinations, 19th of September, 2025 the Head of the Department of Minerals, Petroleum, Energy Economics & Law, Professor O.A. Falode convened a community meeting with the students. The gathering provided an informal setting where the Head and students shared lunch while engaging in constructive discussions regarding academic and departmental matters. The meeting served as an opportunity to reflect on the first semester, address student concerns, and outline expectations for the upcoming second semester.

Discussion on First Semester Matters:
During the meeting, students raised several issues concerning their experiences in the first semester. Key topics included:

Student and Lecturer Attitudes: Some complaints were made regarding the conduct and attitudes of both students and certain lecturers, highlighting the need for mutual respect and professionalism within the department.

Facilities and Resources: Students expressed significant concerns about the adequacy of departmental facilities, including lecture halls, study spaces, and access to learning materials. It was noted that the performance of the staff responsible for managing these facilities was very poor, contributing to persistent problems such as inadequate maintenance, limited availability of study spaces, and delays in addressing student needs.

Connectivity Issues: Sporadic internet and connectivity problems were raised, which affected students’ ability to access online resources, submit assignments, and participate in virtual components of courses.

The Head acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the department’s commitment to improving facilities, addressing connectivity challenges, and ensuring that staff accountability and performance are strengthened.

Plans and Preparations for the Second Semester:
The discussion also focused on preparations for the second semester, ensuring students are well-informed and supported. Topics included:

Academic Calendar: The second semester calendar was presented and discussed, allowing students to plan their academic and personal schedules effectively.

Master’s Proposal Defense: It was confirmed that the proposal defense for master’s students will take place in one month. Students were reminded to prepare thoroughly and adhere to submission deadlines.

Internship Placements: The Head emphasized that internship placements must be relevant to students’ fields of study. Students were reminded of the importance of active supervision and evaluation during the middle of the internship period to ensure meaningful learning outcomes.

Financial Matters – Fee Waivers:

The Head discussed the possibility of granting waivers to allow for late payments under certain circumstances, stressing that these exceptions would be considered on a case-by-case basis and must follow departmental guidelines.
